Come-From-Behind Win Over Newell-Fonda for JV Boys

The JV Boys' basketball team used a strong 4th quarter to earn a hard-fought 52-49 come-from-behind win over Newell-Fonda on Friday, January 20th.

In the first quarter, SV played pretty well minus a few turnovers that led to easy Mustang baskets in transition and only trailed 11-14 after the first period of play. In the first couple of possessions of the 2nd quarter, SV made an open three point basket and tied the game at 14 all. With four minutes remaining before half, SV increased their lead to 21-17 and experienced their largest lead of the first half. At the halftime break, however, the score was all knotted up once again, with the score of 24-24 all.

In the third, the Jaguar offense experienced some inactivity and were stuck on 30 points scored for over a three minute timespan. With two minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, SV trailed 31-41 and desperately needed a huge bucket and a momentum switch in the right direction. Freshman Linclon Akins, who had not seen time on the court in the first 19 minutes of the ball game, was called upon and hit a huge three pointer in the right-hand corner to cut the Mustang advantage to 7 points. After being stagnant on offense a good chunk of time in the 3rd quarter, SV was able to close the final two minutes of the period on a 5-0 run, trailing 36-41 entering the final quarter of play. Timely scoring and a change in defensive strategy helped propel the JV squad on a 16-8 run during the last 7 minutes of the ball game, helping secure the slight three-point, 52-49 victory.

Two consecutive made three point baskets (one made by Cafter Ferry and the other by Brady Hanson) helped the Jaguars take back the lead 45-44 midway through the 4th quarter; and the other successful 3pt FG increased the Jaguar lead to a 48-44 advantage. Now in crunch time, the Jaguars came up with the necessary rebounds in keeping the Mustangs from earning second chance opportunities and were able to get to the free throw line. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, they struggled in this game at the line, going 2 for 7 from the FT line in the 4th quarter. In the end, the Jaguars defended well enough to pull out the come-from-behind win, holding the Mustangs to just 8 points in the quarter, the lowest offensive quarter of the entire ball game.  The JV team is now 11-3 on the season.

B. Hanson (15) and Ferry (12) each reached double-figures in scoring. Hanson was also the co-leader in steals with 3 total in the game. Ferry added 3 assists to 1 turnover and 2 steals. Ross Larson once again continued his hot streak from behind the 3pt line, going 2 for 3 from deep with his 6 points in the game.  Hane Sorenson scored 5 points and added 3 rebounds and 2 assists. The duo of Cale VanSickle and Tyler Moreland each scored 4 points. VanSickle also secured 7 rebounds (2 strong and pivotal rebounds coming in the final possessions of the ball game) and led the team in assists with 4. Moreland also had 5 rebounds as he returned back into the starting line-up. Lincoln Akins finished with three points with his aforementioned momentum-swinging three-pointer late in the 3rd quarter.  Brad Pliner also scored 3 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 blocked shot. Preston Kennedy rebounded well for the Jaguars, as he led the team in the rebounding category with 8 total caroms off the glass. Nick Field also secured one rebound in the game.

End of Quarter Scores: N-F led 14-11, 24-24, N-F led 41-34, SV won 52-49.
