Double OT Ends in Tie for JV Boys
The Southeast Valley JV Boys challenged East Sac County on the Raiders' homecourt for a competitive match-up on Friday, February 3rd. The game was an exciting contest, for both the East Sac County Raiders and the SV Jaguars, where the game concluded with a 42-42 tie after reaching a double overtime period. Due to Varsity basketball action to follow and a time restriction, the game did not continue for the earned additional extra time of play.
After a low scoring 1st quarter, and after allowing East Sac to knock down two three-point field goals, the Jaguars trailed 5-8 after the first 7 minutes of play. The Jaguars focused on spacing the floor much better in the 2nd quarter where they were able to catch and shoot in open space and knock down 3 three-point baskets. In much of the 2nd quarter, there were several back-and-forth lead changes and ties. With two minutes remaining in the first half, with SV leading 17-6, East Sac switched to a full-court press defense and caught the Jaguars off guard to close out the second quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 22-17 at the break.
East Sac came out ready in the 3rd quarter, opening the second half on a 7-0 run in the first three minutes of the 3rd quarter. SV had not been able to put the ball in the bucket for the last 5 minutes of the game going back to the end of the 2nd quarter. Now trailing by twelve with the largest deficit in the game, SV needed to step it up on both sides of the ball if they wanted to stay within striking distance. And so they did, closing out the 3rd quarter on a 11-4 run to cut the score back to a five point ball game and a 11-11 tie in the 3rd quarter of play.
In the 4th quarter of action, the Jaguars and East Sac traded baskets for the most part in the first couple of minutes. But with 4 minutes remaining in the final quarter of regulation, SV was running out of time and trailed 33-39. In the next two minutes, both teams could not find a bucket and the score remained 33-39 now under two minutes of the 4th quarter. With 1:31 remaining in action, SV connected on a three-point FG and cut the score to 36-39 and a SV timeout was taken. Southeast Valley's defense stepped up once again and retained the ball now with 1:02 left to go. The Jaguars then worked the ball on offense and found a wide open Cale VanSickle in the right corner as he calmly knocked down his only three-point attempt in the game to tie the game 39-39 all. The SV defense did their job in the final seconds of the fourth quarter to not allow East Sac to score to send the game into overtime. The Jaguars were able to close out the 4th quarter, much like the 3rd quarter, on a 6-0 run with a valiant effort on both ends of the floor.
In the overtime period, SV won the tip and had the opportunity to score first. But both teams stepped up their defensive effort in the most recent possessions and neither team was able to score for a full 1:19 into the OT period. With about :41 seconds remaining, SV scored the first points of OT and led 41-39. With about 7.4 seconds remaining on the clock, SV inbounded the ball to Hane Sorenson and he was immediately fouled and sent to the free-throw line for an 'one and one' opportunity. Sorenson successfully knocked down his first to give SV the 42-39 advantage. Sorenson's second free-throw attempt looked great out of his outstretched hands and fingers but just rimmed in and out allowing East Sac County to rebound and push up the ball to half court to take their final timeout of the game with just seconds remaining in the game. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, East Sac inbounded the ball to the top of the key and successfully threw in a desperate 3pt shot that fell in and tied the game 42-42 and another OT if time was allotted.
Although the final heave of the ball game took the wind out of SV's sails, the fight and determination to not give up and to compete was very impressive in the last 13-15 minutes of game play. Everyone contributed with their individual strengths and stepped up in one way or another when needed. SV scored 7 total three-pointers, three coming in the 2nd quarter and three coming in the 4th quarter. The three 3pt baskets made in the 4th quarter were definitely clutch shots that gave SV the chance to climb back.
Carter Ferry paced the Jaguars in scoring with 11 points, shooting 5-8 shooting, 3-4 from deep. Ferry also led the team with 3 steals. Ross Larson scored 9 points and dished out 2 assists. VanSickle was perfect from the field, going 3-3 with 7 points scored; while also leading the team in both rebounding and assists, with 7 and 4 respectively. Brady Hanson chipped in with 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Tyler Moreland and Sorenson each scored 3 points, with Morland adding 3 rebounds and Sorenson adding 2 assists and 1 steal. Brad Pliner scored 2 points with 2 assists and 1 blocked shot. Jace Hanson finished with 6 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. Preson Kennedy had 2 rebounds in the game.
End of Quarter Scores: SV 5-ESC 8; SV 17-ESC 22; SV 28-ESC 33; SV 39-ESC 39; SV 42-ESC 42.
