Jag Boys vs Sioux Central 2/3
The Southeast Valley Varsity Boys' basketball team welcomed Sioux Central to Gowrie on Thursday, February 3rd in a rescheduled contest due to winter weather earlier on in the season. Sioux Central came in on a hot 14 game winning streak, and SV was hoping a defensive shake-up could slow down SIoux Central's rhythm. In the end, SV fell by the score of 52-62 to a very solid conference foe.
SV implemented a 'triangle and two' defense on SC's top two players and hoped to make the Rebels rely on other players to produce on the floor. Southeast Valley won the 1st quarter 11-8 and at the halftime break the score was all knotted up at 18-18, with the Jaguar defense executing the game plan. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, a poor 3rd quarter allowed Sioux Central to score 19 points (doubling their 1st half scoring output) to SV's 9 points scored. By the end of the game, SC had figured out how to overcome the 'triangle and two' defense by getting to the free throw line, where the two opponents being defended by man-to-man defense got to the free throw line a total of 22 times. Sioux Central (C. Boettcher and J. Hargens) shot 100%, going 22-22 from the charity stripe. Southeast Valley reached the free throw line only 5 times, with Kolson Kruse shooting 4-5 from the stripe. It is pretty rare to see a game where only 3 individuals reach the free throw line, not to mention shooting 26-27 as a whole. In the 4th quarter, it was an offensive showcase with both teams scoring 25 points apiece.
Aaron Graves earned another double-double in back-to-back games, scoring 16 points. 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. Kolson Kruse chipped in with 13 points and 3 assists. Carter Ferry scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting from the field. Kaleb Scott added 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Justin Loseke and Drew Corell both scored 4 points in the game. Tre Fisher rounded out the Jaguar scoring effort with 3 points and 3 rebounds. Eli Johnson secured 4 rebounds in the contest.
End of Quarter Scores: SV led 11-8, All Tied 18-18, Sioux C. led 37-27, Sioux C. won 62-52.
