Jags Fall to GTRA
The Southeast Valley Varsity Boys' basketball team lost to GTRA by the score of 75-85 at home on Friday, January 28th. The 85 points allowed in this game matched the season high Southeast Valley allowed earlier this season versus SCC, a team SV will have to turn around and face again in their next game on the hardwood this coming Tuesday, Feb. 4th.
The game started off to a rather fast start, with a total of 12 points scored in just a 1:30 off the clock, with SV holding a 7-5 lead. The Jaguars then went scoreless for nearly two minutes, allowing GTRA to make some open three-point baskets and gain confidence on the road that helped them build a run of 28 points scored in the opening quarter. With the score of 22-28, SV needed to step up defensively and earn some stops on the defensive end in the 2nd quarter. SV cut the score to 30-35 about midway through the 2nd quarter before allowing GTRA to go on a 5-0 run to lead 40-30 with three minutes to go before half.
At the halftime break, both teams had scored 19 points in the quarter with SV trailing 47-41. The 47 points scored by the Titans were the most points SV had allowed in a half all season. At the 1:40 mark left in the 3rd quarter, SV again cut the GTRA lead to just a 6 point ballgame with the score of 57-63. SV had several opportunities to cut the deficit to just a one possession ball game, but just couldn't get the job done. Defensive lapses resulting in easy GTRA buckets, missed opportunities in rebounding, and multiple missed opportunities in gathering loose balls kept SV from getting over the hump and changing the outcome of the game.
Offensively, the 75 points scored is SV's 4th time all season they scored 71 or more points in a game. Aaron Graves led the team in scoring with 29 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. Kolson Kruse scored 22 points with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in the contest. Tre Fisher also reached double-figures in scoring with his 10 points, going 2-4 from behind the arc. Justin Loseke chipped in with 6 points, a team-high 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Kaleb Scott added 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Eli Johnson finished with 2 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Drew Corell tallied 2 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists for his efforts. Carl Berglund, Carter Ferry, and Andrew Miller also played in the contest.
The Varsity record is now 8-8 on the '21-'22 campaign.
End of Quarter Scores: GTRA 28-22. GTRA 47-41, GTRA 70-61.
