Jags Win 1st Round of 2A District Basketball
Southeast Valley opened up the postseason with a Class 2A District Boys Basketball-1st round contest on Monday, February 14th; holding on to defeat the Greene County Rams by the score of 65-57 at Carroll Kuemper Catholic High School. This was the second matchup between the two teams in just a week, with SV winning the previous contest by the score of 62-32. Southeast Valley now advances on to play in the next round of districts where they will play Roland-Story in Story CIty on Thursday night.
The Jaguars opened up the contest with a rather strong start, jumping out to an early 9-0 run and led 18-6 with under two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. But a third made three point basket with under a minute left cut the SV lead to just ten points as the quarter concluded with the score of 19-9. In the second quarter, SV led by as much as 11 points on a couple of different occasions. The 2nd quarter finished with both teams scoring 12 points and the halftime break resting at a 31-21 score.
In the second half, the Rams kept the fight alive and cut the SV advantage to just a six point ball game at 33-27 with 4:00 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Jaguars then responded with a 4-0 run to increase their lead back to double-digits, holding serve up 37-27. At the end of 3rd quarter, Greene County trailed 35-43, outscoring the Jaguars in the quarter 14-12, a quarter where the Rams made four three pointers. Greene County made a total of 12 3-pt FG's throughout the entirety of the contest. Entering the final quarter of the ball game, SV was shooting frightfully poor from the charity stripe, shooting just 2-11 as a team. Thankfully, in regards to holding on to win in the end, SV closed out the 4th quarter connecting on 12-17 from the free throw line. In the game, SV finished shooting 50% from the line, making only 14 out of 28 opportunities to extend to a more comfortable lead and end-result.
Aaron Graves paced the Jaguars in scoring, as he finished the game with 30 points and became Southeast Valley's new record holder for most points scored in a career for the Southeast Valley program with 1.323 points. 2016 graduate Conner Conrad was the previous record holder with 1,318 points in a career. Graves started the game on fire from the floor and inside the paint. Graves started the game 7-7 from the field and had as many points as Greene County did at the conclusion of the 1st quarter (9 points), as well as at the 5:00 mark in the 2nd quarter (14 points). Graves also led the team in rebounding and steals, with 11 and 7 respectively. Kolson Kruse checked in with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Tre Fisher added 13 points and one steal. Kaleb Scott finished with 1 point, but secured a season-high 10 rebounds and had two blocked shots. Eli Johnson tallied 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and one steal in the game. Justin Loseke had two rebounds and one assist. Drew Corell recorded one steal defensively.
