JV Boys Basketball 1/17 vs MNW
The Junior Varsity Boys' basketball team played Manson-Northwest Webster at home on Tuesday, January 17th. This was the second match-up between the two school districts this season, with MNW winning the first contest by the score of 33-46. For the second go-around, the SV squad looked forward to the opportunity to split the series 1-1 on the year and win on their home court. The Jaguars put together a solid 1st quarter, and three competitive quarters thereafter, to secure a 47-41 victory over Manson. This was a good win after falling by 13 in the first meeting with the Cougars.
It was a bit of a slow start in the first couple of minutes of the ball game. After the first two minutes of action, the Jaguars trailed 2-8 and needed some momentum to change the direction of the game. With stepped up defensive energy and the knocking down of three three-point shots in the 1st quarter alone, Southeast Valley closed out the quarter on a 15-2 run and led 17-10 going into the second quarter of play. The second and third quarters were close, within two-to-three points at the end of each period. Leading by 5 at the halftime break, the Jaguars were able to keep the lead at 5 points with just under one minute remaining in the third quarter before MNW made a successful 2pt FG to cut SV's advantage to just 3 points going into the 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter, the Jaguars did a great job with a pace and space offensive strategy, making the opportunistic baskets and passes and closed the game out on a 12-9 run. In crunch time, the Jaguars connected on 3 of 5 shooting at the free throw line and secured 6 total rebounds (had 18 the entire game) in the 4th quarter. For the game, SV shot 7 for 15 from deep and roughly 47% from three.
Brady Hanson (13), Carter Ferry (11), and Ross Larson (11) all reached double-figures in scoring. Larson continued staying hot from deep, connecting on 3 of his 5 three-point attempts, and going 6/9 3pt FG in his last two games. B. Hanson also added 4 rebounds. Hane Sorenson played well and set up the offense pretty smoothly, scoring 5 points and dishing out 4 assists and 2 steals. Brad Pliner chipped in with 4 points and was a co-leader in rebounding with 5 caroms off the glass. Preston Kennedy added 2 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals for his efforts in the game. Cale VanSickle rounded out the SV scoring with one point scored in the final minutes of the ball game. VanSickle also had 3 assists and one steal in the ball game. Tyler Moreland did not score but he provided energy on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Defensively he came up with a team-high 4 steals and offensively he retained 3 offensive rebounds giving him 5 total in the game; matching Pliner as the co-leader in rebounding. Lincoln Akins earned one steal in the third quarter.
End of Quarter Scores: SV led 17-10, 22-17, 35-32, 47-41.
The JV record now stands at 10-3 on the season.
