JV Boys Basketball Wins the Season Opener vs Madrid

The Southeast Valley Boys' Junior Varsity team opened up the 2021-2022 season with a home victory over the Madrid Tigers on Thursday, December 2nd. The 45-43 victory christened the new gymnasium and the new gym floor, in a great and exciting match-up with the Tigers.

The Jaguars trailed the majority of the ball game, with holding only two leads; one at the 4 minute mark of the 1st quarter leading 7-4, and then again in the final minute of the 4th quarter, taking back a 12-point deficit to win an exciting comeback win. After holding the Madrid Tigers 0-9 from 3pt range in the 1st quarter, SV stumbled a bit on corner-closeouts in their 2-3 zone defense and allowed 3 made 3-pointers in the final 2 minutes of the 1st half, trailing by 12 at the halftime break, down 18-10.

In the second half, and after a good talk at the halftime break, the Jaguars defense applied more pressure full-court, implementing both a zone-press and full-court man-to-man press to energize both the crowd and the bench to assist the JV team in making an effort to potentially win the game.

In all, the SV defense had a combined 20 steals, with a majority of them coming from the 2nd half. A low turnover rate was also worth noting in the comeback win, as the JV squad only had 6 turnovers in the entire game. The Jaguars outscored the Tigers 27-13 in the second half (only 5 Madrid points in the 4th quarter).

For the game, there were a total of 9 individual Jaguar players scoring in the contest, led by Carter Ferry with 11 points in just 2 quarters of play. Jace Hanson was next in scoring with 8 points, 6 of which came up big off the glass in the final minutes of the 4th quarter. Dalton Crouse had a solid well-rounded contribution towards the victory, scoring 7 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Andrew Miller added 6 points, 3 steals, and 1 blocked shot. Nate Scott chipped in with 4 points and 4 rebounds, while also providing the key defensive play and a blocked shot at the end of the game to secure the 2-point win as time expired. Hane Sorenson knocked down a 3pt FG in the 2nd quarter to tally 3 points and 1 steal in the game. Rounding out the Jaguar scoring were the trio of Drake Warland, Brady Hanson, and Tyler Moreland with 2 points each. Moreland also had 4 rebounds, while Brady and Drake each had 2 steals. After not playing in the first 3 quarters, Warland was asked to come in and spark some energy in the defensive man-to-man press and had an instant impact, coming up with 2 steals, 1 assist, and an impressive finish underneath the basket on a fastbreak. Also playing and contributing in the great comeback win were Ross Larson, Ethan Ackerson, and Gavin Weier.

End of Quarter Scores: Madrid led 12-9, 30-18, 38-31, SV 45-43.
