JV Boys Complete on the Road

The Southeast Valley Junior Varsity Boys' basketball team opened up the week of January 10th with two road contests on back-to-back nights, first falling by the score of 43-53 to a solid program in Roland-Story; and the next night defeating Webster City in overtime by the score of 41-33.

In the Roland-Story match-up, Southeast Valley kept it close in the first half, trailing by two points at the halftime break with the score of 19-21. In the 2nd half, R-S increased their lead to 33-23 and a ten point advantage before SV fought back to make it just a one possession ball game with two minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, trailing 32-35. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, the R-S offense was just too much to handle as they outscored the Jags 16-11 in the fourth quarter. The 53 points scored against the Jaguar defense was the most points allowed so far this season.

Andrew Miller came alive in the 2nd half of the ball game, scoring 18 of his game-high 21 points. Miller also contributed with game-highs in rebounding and steals made, recording 6 and 5 respectively. Carter Ferry chipped in with 7 points and 2 assists. Dalton Crouse tallied 5 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals in the game. Jace Hanson added 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Tyler Paterson and Nate Scott each scored 3 points to round out the Jaguar scoring. Scott continued his strong defensive play with 3 blocked shots and 1 steal. Tyler Moreland earned 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Ross Larson, Hane Sorenson, and Drake Warland also played in the game.

End of Quarter Scores: SV led 10-8, R-S led 21-19, 37-32.

The following night, the JV team met the Lynx of Webster City on the hardwood inside Webster City's nice gymnasium. The game needed an extra overtime period, where the Jaguars finished the game on a 9-1 run in the final three minutes to secure the victory.

The Jaguars held a slight one-point advantage at the conclusion of the opening period, leading 7-6. The Jaguars then kept the Lynx to just 4 points in the 2nd quarter, leading 15-10 at the intermission break. After leading the first three quarters, SV stalled some on the offensive end of the floor and went scoreless for four full minutes midway through the fourth quarter.  Webster City then connected on a made three point basket to tie the game at 30-30 with 3 minutes to go on the clock. Costly turnovers and poor close-outs on defense allowed Webster City to climb back into the game. Webster City made all three of their three-point field goals of the entire game in the 4th quarter to outscore the Jaguars 15-8. At the end of regulation, the score was knotted up 32-32.

In the overtime period, the Jaguars stepped up big and succeeded on knocking down some clutch shot opportunities. Brady Hanson knocked down an open three pointer off a broken play, assisted by Dalton Crouse after earning an offensive rebound. The second chance opportunity and the big time made shot increased the lead to 38-32 with one minute remaining. Andrew Miller and Crouse combined to shoot 4-6 from the charity stripe in the OT perod to help secure the 9 point win.

Carter Ferry and Miller each scored in the double-figures to pace the Jaguars, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. Miller also had 8 rebounds and 2 steals in the win. Brady Hanson added 5 points (1-1 3pt, 2-2 FT) and 2 steals defensively. Tyler Moreland and Jace Hanson each scored 4 points and grabbed 3 rebounds apiece. Tyler Paterson chipped in with 3 points and had his best game rebounding of the basketball. Paterson collected a total of 8 rebounds, 5 of which coming on the offensive end of the floor. Crouse rounded out the Jaguar scoring with 2 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Nate Scott recorded 3 rebounds in the game. Ross Larson and Drake Warland also played and contributed to winning the game.

End of Quarter Scores: SV led 7-6, 15-10, 24-17, 32-32, SV 41-33.

The JV record now sits at 9-3 on the season.
