JV Boys Fall to Roland-Story, Bounce Back versus Webster City

The Southeast Valley Boys' JV squad played in back-to-back nights to start off the week of January 9th. On Monday night, the Jaguars hosted the Norsemen from Roland-Story and fell by the score of 44-56 to a solid baseketball program, a program that reached the state tournament just a season ago. The next night, the Jaguars competed in a back and forth game against class 3A Webster City and squeaked out a 50-48 win.

In the Roland-Story contest, the Jaguars came out ready to play and held a 13-8 advantage after the opening quarter. At the half time break, the Jaguars saw their 5 point advantage slowly dwindle away and trailed 23-26 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Norsemen and Jaguars matched each other in the scoring column, both scoring 11 points and a score of 34-37 reading on the scoreboard going into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, frustrations boiled over in the 4th quarter.  With early foul trouble resulting in a couple players disqualified due to earning 5 fouls, and lack of size in the frontcourt (down a couple players) the Jaguars were outscored 19-10 in the final 7 minutes and lost 44-56. (End of Quarter Scores: SV led 13-8, RS led 26-23, 37-34, 42-56)

Carter Ferry paced the Jaguars in scoring with 11 points and 2 assists. The duo of Ross Larson and Jace Hanson each dropped 8 points, with J. Hanson leading the team in rebounding with 6 boards off the glass. Brady Hanson chipped in with 6 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Hane Sorenson had a "5 & 5" night where he scored 5 points and rebounded well as a guard with 5 rebounds. Brad Pliner packed the stat sheet in this contest; scoring 4 points, grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing out 2 assists, earning 2 steals, and blocking 2 Roland-Story field goal attempts. Cale VanSickle rounded out the scoring for the Jaguars with 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 blocked shot and 1 steal. Nick Field tallied 2 rebounds and 1 assist off the bench.

In the Tuesday night game, hosting Webster City, the Jaguars and the Lynx traded baskets and runs throughout the game. It was a competitive game all the way through, with each team leading as much as 8 and 7 points in both halves. The Jaguars were able to close out each of the first two quarters on positive runs, closing the 1st quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 10-8 lead at the first quarter break; and went on a 11-4 run to close out the first half and lead 23-20 at the intermission break.  But in the second half, the roles for each team seemed to reverse. With SV leading 29-21 midway though the 3rd quarter, Webster City went on a 10-3 run of their own and cut the SV advantage to just a one point game with 1:00 remaining in the third period. Heading into the final quarter of play, WC now had the lead with a score of 35-33. The fourth quarter, much like the rest of the game, was a good one. The 4th quarter alone was the highest scoring quarter of the ball game. The Jaguars scored 17 points to Webster City's 13 points, allowing the Jaguars to squeak out the two point victory. Free throws down the stretch were huge in the outcome of the game.  The Jaguars were successful on 7 of 9 free throws attempts in the fourth quarter and in crunch time. As a team, the Jaguars finished 11-17 from the charity stripe, led by Carter Ferry going 8-11. The Jaguars executed down the stretch taking care of the ball in full-court pressure, spacing out the floor, and getting to the FT line.

Carter Ferry scored a game-high 22 points, and also led the SV team in assisted baskets with 3 assists. Brady Hanson was 5-8 from the field, scoring 11 points, 5 steals, and 2 assists. Cale VanSickle bounced back from a frustrating night the night before, scoring 9 points and securing 10 caroms off the glass, just one point shy of a double-double. Hane Sorenson chipped in with 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Tyler Moreland and Brad Pliner each scored 2 points to round out the Jaguar scoring in the game. Jace Hanson tallied 6 rebounds, one assist, and one blocked shot. Preston Kennedy recorded one defensive rebound in the contest. Lincoln Akins also played in the game.

(End of Quarter Scores: SV led 10-8, 23-20, WC led 35-33, SV won 50-48)
