JV Boys Finish Season 12-5-1

The Southeast Valley Junior Varsity Boys' basketball team wrapped up their 2022-2023 basketball season on Thursday, February 9th, defeating Clarion-Goldfield-Dows by the score of 50-31 on the road. The 19-point win helped improve the JV record to 12-5-1 on the year. The JV squad finished the year 9-1 protecting homecourt, while going 3-4-1 on the road.

In their final contest of the season, the JV squad came out on fire in the first quarter, jumping out to an early 20-7 advantage and led 8-0 in the first three minutes of the ball game. In the first quarter alone, SV made 5 of 7 three-point attempts and shot 8 for 14 total in the first seven minutes. The Jaguars also had a game-high 7 assists in the first quarter, meaning they assisted on all of their made baskets except just one in the opening quarter of play. For the game, SV finished with only 16 assists. A big part of this was primarily due to the effects of the full-court pressure SV initiated in the beginning. Defense definitely led to more efficient offense, mostly in transition and easier opportunities to share the ball and score.

In the second quarter of play, the Cowboys and Jaguars matched each other basket for basket, with both teams scoring 10 points apiece and a score of 30-17 on the clock during the intermission break. Again, in the third quarter, the 'Boys and Jags matched each other in scoring, both scoring only 7 points in the 3rd, with a Jaguar advantage of 37-24 and a 13-point advantage still intact. After playing two consecutive quarters all matched up, SV went back to the full-court pressure defense for the first 3:00 minutes of the 4th quarter. After increasing the lead to 41-26, SV fell back to half court 'D' and outscored CGD 13-7 in the final quarter of play. After a sizzling 1st quarter, the Jaguars only shot 5 for 20 in the last three quarters of the ball game. Two late-game made 3-point baskets by the SV offense helped open the scoring gap a bit more as the game came to a close.  The only other points scored in the 4th quarter all came from the free-throw line.

The duo of Brady Hanson and Hane Sorenson paced the Jaguars in scoring with 9 points apiece. Both Hanson and Sorenson started out the 1st quarter 2-2 from deep. Hanson also led the team in assists with 5 total in the ball game. Cale VanSickle chipped in with 8 points scored, 5 rebounds collected, and team-high (and perhaps a game-high) 3 steals earned. Both Ross Larson and Jace Hanson scored 6 points in the game, with Hanson leading the team in rebounding with 6 boards and game-high 4 blocked shots. Larson added two assists. Tyler Moreland added 4 points, 2 assists, and 1 steal for his efforts in the game. Carter Ferry and Lincoln Akins each knocked down an open three-point attempt, both finishing with 3 points scored. Brad Pliner rounded out the Jaguar scoring with 2 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Preston Kennedy added 2 rebounds and 1 assist.

For the season, the JV squad had plenty of close-score ball games, six of which were decided by 4 points or fewer. Two games made it to an overtime period, with one of them making it to an additional overtime. Four of the contests came down to the final shot of the ball game, and a handful of wins came down to the free-throw line. The Jaguars averaged 44.6 points per game, while the Jaguars' opponents average was around 39.6 points per game.

Members of the JV team this season include the following: Carter Ferry, Lincoln Akins, Tyler Moreland, Brady Hanson, Nick Field, Hane Sorenson, Jace Hanson, Cale VanSickle, Preston Kennedy, Ross Larson, Brad Pliner, Gauge Jones, and Gavin Weier; and with the help of our Managers: Taylor Willardson, Emilie Schnell, and Sophia Gutshall.

Coach Johnson, Coach Gutshall, Coach Sorenson, and Coach Dahlstrom congratulate the JV team on a successful season; and look forward to continued success, dedication, and improvement in the years to come, both on and off the basketball floor.
