JV Boys' Open the 22-23 Season

The JV Boys' Basketball team opened up their 2022-23 basketball season on Thursday, December 1st, falling by the score of 47-51. The game was played in Carroll versus the Knights of Kuemper Catholic.

The Jaguars struggled offensively in the beginning, scoring only two points in the first five minutes of the opening quarter, which ended with the score of 8-17. Soon thereafter, the Knights extended their lead to 22-8 before the Jaguars came storming back and closed out the first half of the game on a 14-4 run to only be trailing 22-26 at the intermission break. In the third quarter, Southeast Valley took the lead at 31-30 after starting the quarter on a 9-4 run. Unfortunately for the Jags, Kuemper closed out the quarter with a 16-2 run in a four minute span and increased their lead to double-digits once again with one final quarter remaining. The young Jaguars, who had already climbed their way back from an early 14 point deficit, needed another strong showing to give themselves an opportunity to be in it in the end. The Jaguars scraped and clawed, literally and figuratively (Brady Hanson taking a finger to an eye in the final minutes of the game), and outscored the Knights 14-5 in the final quarter. The new shot clock rule this year in high school basketball was interesting to experience, especially late in the game, being somewhat advantageous for the Jaguars on a late game possession or two. The Jaguars had their opportunities and played relentlessly, especially on the boards; but just fell short in the opening game of the season as the team begins to get comfortable with a new mix of players and a new offensive system.

Tyler Moreland and Ross Larson paced the Jaguars offensively with 10 points apiece. Jace Hanson chipped in with 8 points scored and 13 rebounds collected. Guards Brady Hanson and Lincoln Akins added 6 points and 5 points, respectively. Preston Kennedy added 3 points and 3 rebounds. Brad Pliner and Gavin Weier rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.
