JV Boys Overcome Cold Shooting, Earn Come From Behind Win
Newell-- On a frigid Friday evening, the SV basketball teams travelled northwest to challenge the Newell-Fonda Mustangs on their homecourt. The JV Boys got the night started, overcoming cold temperatures and lack of depth due to illness and injuries. The Jaguars only suited eight players for this game, SV normally has eleven players available.
On a night of blistering cold, the Jaguars were cold from the floor as they went 3/13 in the opening quarter, and 4/13 in the second. Despite just shooting 27% from the field in the first half, the Jaguars held a slight advantage at the break leading 20-19.
The cold shooting continued in the 3rd, as the Jaguars again only shot 3/13 from the floor in the quarter. With a stagnant offense and a Mustang lead of as much as 8 points, the Jaguars turned up the intensity with full-court pressure defense and cut the disadvantage to just 4 entering the final quarter of play. The Jaguars executed to a 'T' in the press defense, quickly making up for the deficit and then some. The Jaguars put together a stellar 4th quarter performance, outscoring Newell-Fonda 25-4 to earn the come from behind win on the cold night both on and off the hardwood. In the 4th quarter alone, the Jaguars shot 55% from the floor, a much appreciated sight after the first three quarters of action.
The trio of Declan McGuire, Conner Rentz, and Landon Vote all scored 10 points each for the Jags. McGuire scored 8 of his 10 in the 4th quarter as he did an excellent job at the point of the defensive pressure. Rentz led the team in steals with 6 takeaways and also added 4 assists. Dawson Tuel added 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and one amazing blocked shot that was the catalyst that started the come from behind momentum.
Caden Cramer chipped in with 6 points and 9 rebounds. Colby Peterson played well with extended minutes, scoring 4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and just one turnover. Jacob Paterson added 3 points, 3 rebounds, and one steal. Ben Wanat rounded out the scoring with 2 points and 2 rebounds.
