JV Boys Squeak by PAC

The Southeast Valley Junior Varsity Boys' basketball team squeaked out a narrow 43-39 victory over Pocahontas Area on Tuesday, January 25th, as they returned home for their first home contest in well over a month.

Hard to tell, but a home crowd advantage could have played a part in the JV team storming back in the 2nd half to overcome an early nine point deficit in the 1st half. Coming off back-to-back nights of basketball action, the JV squad started out the game rather sluggish; trailing by seven at the conclusion of the 1st period and then trailing by nine points, down 5-14, with under five minutes remaining in the half. At the intermission break, SV trailed 18-23.

Needing to start out the second half on the right path, the first 3:00 minutes of the 3rd quarter was vital in setting up the opportunity for the Jaguars to swing the momentum in their favor. With just under 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd, Southeast Valley tied the game at 25-25, allowing PAC to score just 2 points in nearly 4 minutes of the quarter. Going into the 4th quarter, SV only trailed by one with a score of 31-32. By the two minutes remaining mark, SV had gained the lead and increased it to a five point game, holding onto a 40-35 advantage. In the last two minutes of the ball game, SV needed to protect the ball in full-court pressure situations, and free throw opportunities needed to be successful if the Jags wanted to walk off the court as victors. SV finished the 4th quarter shooting 4-6 from the free throw line, helping the chances of squeaking out the 1 or 2 possession ball game. In the end, Southeast Valley overcame some adversity after trailing pretty much all of the first three quarters; and outscored the Indians 25-16 in the second half, earning their 13th win on the season.

Leading statistical leaders for the Jaguars were Andrew Miller with 15 points and 5 rebounds; Carter Ferry with 9 points and 2 assists; Dalton Crouse with 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals; Jace Hanson with 5 points and 7 rebounds; Brady Hanson with 4 points and 2 steals; Tyler Paterson with 2 points and one rebound; Nate Scott with 2 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot; and Tyler Moreland with 2 offensive rebounds. Drake Warland and Ross Larson also played in the game.

End of Quarter Scores: PAC led 12-5, PAC led 23-18, PAC 32-31, SV won 43-39.
