The Southeast Valley Junior Varsity Boys' basketball team earned a hard-fought road victory over the Newell-Fonda Mustangs on Friday, January 21st, winning by the score of 29-23.

The game opened up with an impressive up-tempo pace as both teams tried to press one another, trading buckets and possessions at ease. In just the first 3 minutes of the ball game, it was all knotted up 8-8. At this point, the Mustangs had scored all their points in transition or by breaking SV's 2-2-1 press, so SV decided to just sit back in half-court defense, and it definitely paid off. At the halftime break, the Jaguars held on to a 17-16 advantage. The up-tempo ball game quickly became a defensive slugfest in the 2nd half, as Southeast Valley held Newell-Fonda scoreless in the 3rd quarter. The Jaguars kept the Mustangs from scoring for a entirety of ten minutes in the second half, before N-F finally scored from the FT line with just three minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Jags, they were also held scoreless for nearly 6 minutes in the 4th quarter and could not take advantage of their defensive output. The largest lead of the ballgame was at 22-16 with SV leading the entire second half. N-F then cut the score to just 22-20 with under 1:00 minute to go in the tightly-contested, physical match-up. The Jaguars scored all of their 7 points in the fourth quarter with under a minute left in the game and all 7 points scored coming from the free-throw line, going 7-13 from the charity stripe.  Although the Jaguars couldn't take advantage of great defensive play, they did overcome relentless full-court pressure all four quarters, and stepped up big in high pressure situations to prevail in victory.

Carter Ferry paced the Jaguars in scoring with his 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Andrew Miller nearly had himself a double-double, scoring 10 points (4-5 FT) and 9 total rebounds. Freshman Brady Hanson scored 3 points, 2 steals, and 2 assists in his first start of the season. Jace Hanson chipped in with 2 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots put up by the Mustang offense. Tyler Moreland rounded out the Jaguars scoring with 1 point and 1 steal. Dalton Crouse collected a total of 6 rebounds and earned 7 steals in the game. Nate Scott secured 4 total rebounds, three of them coming on the offensive end of the floor. Tyler Paterson had two rebounds in the contest, and Ross Larson had two steals in the game. Hane Sorenson had one blocked shot. Drake Warland earned one steal as he stepped in late in the 4th quarter to try and provide strong defensive pressure and replace a minor in-game injury suffered by B. Hanson in the second half.

The JV squad is now 11-3 on the season.

End of Quarter Scores: Tied 10-10, SV 17-16, SV 22-16, SV 29-23.
