JV Boys Win Overtime Thriller 57-53
The Southeast Valley JV Boys' basketball squad secured their second straight victory on the early part of the season with an overtime thriller against St. Edmond on Tuesday, December 6th. The game was played in the Gowrie Auxiliary Gym.
The Jaguars jumped out early and led as much as 13 points late in the 1st half, up 27-14 with just 1:57 remaining before break. To start the 3rd quarter, SV led 27-16 and controlled the lead through the third, but allowed the Gaels to score 17 points in the quarter compared to Southeast Valley's 12 points scored. With a sprinkle of St. Edmond Gael Varsity members in the second half, St. Edmond outscored the Jaguars 37-26 in the final two periods before sending it to overtime . With a three point lead after some clutch free throws by the Jaguars, and 4.7 seconds on the clock, the SV Jags attempted to defend the three point line; and executed the drawn out plans from Coach Gutshall at the most recent timeout perfectly, but the Gaels connected on a half-court desperation 3-point shot that just barely made it over the outreached hands of Jace Hanson and a great close-out. Heading into overtime, the score read 53-53 and 3:00 would be added to the clock. In the OT period, the Jaguars spread the floor and worked the clock, controlling the offense in hopes of getting to the free throw line and knocking down the all-important FT's in crunch time. In the 3:00 period, the Jags held the Gaels scoreless and scored all four points from the charity stripe.
Brady Hanson led the way in scoring for the Jaguars, scoring 21 points with 4 rebounds and 4 steals in the game. Ross Larson was electric in the first half, scoring 11 of his 17 total points in the first 14 minutes of the ball game.
