Rough Week on the Hardwood for JV Boys
The JV Boys for Southeast Valley Basketball experienced a rough week on the hardwood in the final full week of January.
A shorthanded JV squad traveled to Pocahontas on Tuesday, January 24th to take on the PAC Indians. A rough night of shooting from the field (12-43, 28% shooting) and the inability to keep PAC from scoring double-figures in each of the four quarters kept the Jaguars out of contention, falling by the score of 29-58.
Cale VanSickle paced the Jaguars in scoring with 12 points, while also adding 3 offensive rebounds and 2 steals in the game. Carter Ferry chipped in with 9 points in just two quarters of play. Tyler Moreland added 4 points scored and 4 rebounds collected. The duo of Brady Hanson and Preston Kennedy rounded out the Jaguar scoring with 2 points a piece. Kennedy also added 4 rebounds in the contest. Brad Pliner secured 3 rebounds and had one steal. Ross Larson, Lincoln Akins, and Nick Field all played in the game. The Jaguars were without regular starters Hane Sorenson and Jace Hanson for this contest.
End of Quarter Scores: SV 7-PAC 10; SV 15-PAC 25; SV 22-PAC 44; SV 29-PAC 58.
On Thursday, January 26th, the Jaguars traveled to Madrid for a rescheduled matchup with the Tigers. The Jaguars couldn't quite put together a full, four quarter fight and fell by the score of 43-53.
The Jaguars led 14-11 after the first 7 minutes of the ball game. Ross Larson was on fire and kept the Jaguars in the contest, especially in the first quarter, where he scored 12 of the 14 points put up by the Jaguar offense. After a sizzling opening first quarter, the Jaguars cooled off fast; going scoreless for over 5 minutes of action, or the lack thereof. In the 2nd quarter, the Jaguars were outscored 14-5 and now trailed by 6 at the halftime break resulting in a 9 point swing in the 2nd quarter. The Jaguars battled back and got the score to a 30-34 contest, but Madrid closed out the 3rd period on a 7-2 run and led by 9 and a 41-32 score entering the final quarter of play. In the 4th quarter, the Jaguars trailed as much as 15 points before climbing back to get it under a 10 point deficit with under a minute remaining. The Jaguars scored their last 7 points of the ball game all from the free-throw line. If they could have converted on some "and one" opportunities, they had a strong chance of making the final minute or two really interesting.
Ross Larson had a game high 20 points on 7-9 shooting and 6-8 from 3pt land. Brady Hanson also shot the ball well from deep, shooting 2-3 from 3pt and 8 points scored. Hane Sorenson returned to the line-up after an illness and added 7 points scored; going 4-4 from the FT stripe (interestingly enough, Sorenson also went 4-4 from FT in the Varsity game as well) and led the team in rebounding with 8 total caroms off the glass. Tyler Moreland added 4 points and 4 rebounds. Cale VanSickle scored 2 points and earned 5 rebounds in the contest. Nick Field and Carter Ferry each scored one point to round out the Jaguar scoring. Brad Pliner and Preston Kennedy each collected 2 rebounds in the game. Lincoln Akins tallied 3 steals. The Jaguars shot 9-17 from 3pt land as a team, which was great. On the other hand, however, the Jaguars were cold from inside the 3pt line, shooting just 4-15 on 2pt FG's.
End of Quarter Scores: SV 14-Madrid 11; SV 19-Madrid 25; SV 32-Madrid 41; SV 43-53.
