Conference Title Secured Despite Weather-Shortened Meet
The Southeast Valley Boys Junior High Track Team loaded the bus for the last time this season, traveling to Lake City Friday, May 15, for the Twin Lakes Conference Meet. The Jags returned home with TLC Conference Team Champs 2026 honors! The middle school boys' track team battled through the heat before lightning forced officials to cancel the remainder of the event, with just five boys' events left to compete. Despite the abrupt ending, the boys had already done enough to secure the title of Twin Lakes Conference Champions, capping off an outstanding season with another championship performance.
The team delivered strong performances across the board, highlighted by multiple personal records and two new records.
In the sprints, Hudson Ulicki raced to a personal-best time of 12.89 seconds in the 100-meter dash, while Wyatt Muench clocked a PR of 25.45 in the 200-meter dash. Caleb Schoonover also turned in a personal-best effort in the 200-meter dash with a time of 33.57.
Distance runners continued their strong season as the 4x800 relay team of Grant Peterson, Henry Sandstrom, Jayden Christie, and Griffin Vote earned a personal record with a time of 10:22.38.
The relay squads were once again a major strength for the team. Hudson Ulicki, Cam Johnson, Traysen Gutshall, and Zaine Phillips ran a season-best 1:50.49 in the 4x200 relay. In the shuttle hurdle relay, Jax Hindt, Jaxson Halsrud, Bentley Jondle, and Bennett Nolte posted a PR time of 1:10.86.
Field events also helped power the boys to the conference title. Wyatt Muench recorded a personal-best throw of 42-04 in the shot put, while Reece Carlson added a PR throw of 37-10.5. Nicholas Vogel threw a personal-best 107-07 in the discus.
Two athletes etched their names into the record books during the meet. Landyn Fisher broke the SV school record in the 100-meter hurdles with a blazing time of 14.37 seconds. Tristan Hanson also delivered a record-setting performance in the long jump, soaring 18-05.50 to set a new Twin Lakes Conference junior high record.
Although the meet ended early because of severe weather, the boys left no doubt about their dominance throughout the season. “This year, I've had the chance to enjoy many fun things in track, such as the tense atmosphere, many jokes, and nicknames I've been called. I believe things for the team went well since we've broken so many records this year. I also feel like I have grown as an athlete, having become more confident in my events and learning to push myself harder during practices and meets. I look forward to making more memories with the team and seeing how much we can accomplish next season,” says seventh-grader Nikota Lyons.
The conference championship adds another accomplishment to an already memorable year filled with hard work, improvement, and record-breaking performances. Coach Amber Sorenson caps off the article with a personal note. “The Southeast Valley Boys worked hard all season, and it showed during their team performance. This victory was a complete team effort! One of the best things about being part of this team is the support these boys show for each other. It is that support that creates such an outstanding team atmosphere. This is a great and hardworking group of young athletes, and their futures are looking bright! It has been a privilege and a whole lot of fun to coach these boys. A special thank you to our manager, Dominick Paterson, for his help this season. The entire coaching staff would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the families for their support, and especially the team members for their hard work and coachability, which resulted in making this season a success. Your coaches could not be prouder of all of you!”
