Dayton Invite: Roper Wins Gold, Comp Claims Bronze, SV takes 3rd Overall
Southeast Valley hosted their annual 5-team Invite on Friday, May 2nd. The Jaguars welcomed the Greene County Rams, the Ogden Bulldogs, the Glidden-Ralston Wildcats, and the MNW Cougars to Dayton and Oak Park Golf & Rec in a Varsity contest.
The meet was played in nearly perfect conditions, even after a quick 20-minute shower as the teams started to arrive. The meet moved along smoothly, with 10 groups of three making their way around the course. After two and a half hours, golfers and scorecards started to return to the clubhouse. In an exciting conclusion, the determination between 1st and 2nd place for team results was decided by just one stroke.
Team Scores: 5th place: Glidden-Ralston 231, 4th place: MNW 208, 3rd place: SV 180, 2nd place and earning medals: Ogden 174, 1st Place and earning medals: Greene County 173.
As a team, SV carded the following scores individually: Karson Roper 39, Will Comp 41, Brady Hanson 49, Dawson Tuel 51, Drew Temple 51, and Hayden Butrick 52.
With 30 golfers competing in the meet, the Invite awards the top 5 individual scorers with a medal. If there is a tie, a sudden death playoff is played to determine a top 5 placing.
SV’s Karson Roper showcased his composure with the clubs in his hands and earned gold with a solid 39 score. Roper parred his first four holes as he started on the challenging par-5, hole two. A great bounce back from the night before.
Earning 2nd place was Ogden’s Jace Benbow with a 40 card. Based on his scores, he was set up for a possible run at the gold medal, but finished with two bogies on his last two holes of the night.
SV’s Will Comp claimed 3rd place with a 41 after birding his last and final hole of the night, the formidable number 9. An excellent way to end his four-year career as a Varsity competitor in his final meet on his home course.
Greene County’s Nathan Towers earned 4th place with a 42 card. Towers’ teammates in Drew Wolterman and Keaton Hinote, and Ogden’s Jase Coleman, all carded 43 on the night and were sent out to have a play-off for the 5th and final medal up for grabs. After a two-hole tussle, Ogden’s Coleman came out on top and earned 5th place.
Many spectators and coaches acknowledged how much they enjoyed the evening. It turned out to be a great night both playing and watching golf.
