Boys Track and Field Wins 8th Meet of the Season

Coming off their conference championship two nights earlier, the Southeast Valley boys’ track team had little rest as they competed in the Jim Yunek Relays in Lake City on Thursday, May 7th. With a very different line-up as the Jaguars rested some of their top athletes after Tuesday, the Southeast Valley showed their depth on Thursday as they won their 8th meet of the season. The Jaguars scored 155 points to out-distance second place IKM-Manning with 92 points.

The Jaguars got points from five first place finishes. Colden Mapel was a double winner in the high jump (5-10”) and the 110m high hurdles (16.03) where he tied his own freshmen record. Kolton Ollinger won the 200m dash (23.84) and Colin Johnson won the 400m dash in a school record time of 50.29. The 4 x 100m quartet of Casey Hanson, Logan Jaeschke, Bryce Harrison and Colin Johnson found gold with a 43.90.

Logan Jaeschke was second in the 400m dash behind Colin with a 51.62, while Lincoln Akins’s 2:05.52 in the 800m run was also 2nd and the 3rd fastest 800m time in school history. Owen Nuss improved his 6th fastest 1600m time in school history by also winning silver in a personal best time of 4:50.91.

Three relay teams also took runner-up honors. In the sprint medley relay, Parker Bintz, Riley Fawcett, Keelan Wellman and Ethan Martin ran 1:44.52. Trennis Stevens, Leo Ramirez, Keelan Wellman and Colden Mapel’s 1:05.92 in the shuttle hurdle was the 4th fastest in school history and second in the meet. Drew Dorsey, August Akins, Logan Bintz and Ethan Tucker also found second place in the 4x800m relay in a time of 9:23.77.

Setting the freshmen record in the 4x200m relay was Parker Bintz, Ethan Martin, Tucker Ollinger and Josiah Hefley with a 1:40.45 for third. The distance medley quartet of Hanson, Harrison, Nuss and Landon Vote took 3rd (3:53.02) while the 4 x 400m relay of Tucker Ollinger, Lincoln Akins, Logan Bintz and Ethany Tucker also claimed the bronze medal in 3:51.16.

Deegan Brandel had a career best in the discus for a third place finish (140-03”). Leo Ramirez had a career best in the high hurdles (17.30) for third as well. Trennis Stevens took third in the 400m low hurdles also setting a personal best of 1:00.24 while Alex Burger was 3rd in the long jump (19-06.5”).

Fourth place finishes went to Ian Brunner (shot put, 41-10”), Kasen Loeffler (3200m, 11:17.50, PR), Kasen also took 5th in the 800m run (2:19.03). Asher Loeffler had a PR in the high jump for 5th (5-04”), while Josiah improved his 400m hurdle freshmen record to 1:01.70 while also finishing 5th. August Akins picked up a sixth place finish in the 1600m run with a career best of 5:10.54.  

The Jaguars compete at Sioux Central on Thursday, May 14th for their class 2A state qualifying meet. The top two in each event and the next best 8 times and distances in the state on Thursday advance to the Iowa State track & field championships held at Drake Stadium the following weekend.
