SV Boys Compete at The Drake Relays
The Southeast Valley boys’ track team had the honor of qualifying three events for this year’s Drake Relays in Des Moines. The Drake Relays are one of the “premier annual track & field meets that showcases collegiate, professional athletes and Iowa’s top high school track and field athletes and is better known as ‘America’s Athletic Classic’.”
This year, Colin Johnson qualified in the 110m high hurdles, Alex Burger in the 400m low hurdles and the 4 x 100m relay team of Casey Hanson, Logan Jaechke, Colin Johnson and Kayden Showers.
On Friday, Colin Johnson competed in the field of the top 32 Iowa high school athletes across all classes at Drake Stadium. Colin ran a 14.98 to finish 26th overall. Saturday morning saw the 4 x 100m relay team take to the blue oval in the 96 team field from all classes in the state of Iowa. The Jaguars finished 67th overall in a time of 43.94.
In the Jaguar’s final event of Saturday, Alex Burger set a new school record of 53.17 in the 400m hurdles. His impressive time placed him 7th overall in the small field of 16 athletes. The size of the field varies from event to event at the Drake Relays, determined by the relays committee.
The boys after a busy weekend competing at both Drake and the Mustang Relays, also somehow managed to find time to attend the annual prom and after prom festivities this weekend.
