Varisty Football Beats MNW to Open Season
The Jaguar football team started the season with a 20-6 win over Manson Northwest Webster.
This was a big game for a week one opponent as Manson were back to back District Champions and returned 7 starters on both sides of the ball so the Jaguars knew they had their hands full.
Manson returned the leading Rusher in class 1A last year and had switched their offense to let him have the ball more and more. So Coach Graves had to come up with a new plan to stop him and the plan worked great as the Jags held him to 24 carries for 67 total yards. This was key to our success because 10 of the 11 Manson possessions never produced a 1st down. The only drive which was a 10 minute drive they got a first down was their long scoring drive but that was after we stopped them and made them punt and Logan Jaeschke returned it for a TD but we had a roughing the punter penalty which gave them the ball back. This was a big momentum breaker and gave them a chance.
The first three drives for the Jags offense were not good. We turned it over and just struggled to move the ball. Finally on the 4th drive Mason Bahr hit Byrce Harrison for a 38 yard TD and that was exactly what the Jags needed to get things going.
Then on the 5th drive the line blocked very well and Casey Hanson had runs of 35-15 and a 3 yard TD. Spencer Peterson made the PAT and Jags lead 13-0 at half
The 3rd quarter was all Manson after our one mistake hitting the punter as they put together a 17 play drive together and over 10 minutes off the play clock to make the score 13-6
Jags needed to give the defense a break but instead threw a quick INT and Manson had the ball back again. But 2 plays later Degan Brandel got an INT and got the ball back for us.
The very first play Casey Hanson took it for a 32 yard TD and Spencer Peterson hit the PAT for the 20-6 lead and 20-6 win.
The defense played great
Deegan Bradel 9.5 tackles and INT
Clay Lambert 9.5 tackles
Byrce Harrsion 6 tackles
Logan Jaeschke 6 tackles
Jacob Paterson 5 tackles
Casey HAnson rushed 14 times for 119 yards and 2 TD's
Mason Bahr rushed 9 times for 41 and threw for 74 yards and a TD
Wyatt Muench rushed 7 times for 18
Logan Jaeschke had 3 receptions for 19 but also had 30 yards in punt returns and 36 yard kick return plus a long TD called back.
Byrce Harrison had 2 receptions for 54 yards
Spencer Peterson had 3 Touchbacks and these are huge to make teams start at the 20.
Great starts to the season. Next week we face a very tough Emmetsburg.
